Into the Void of Unknown

A retro-futuristic comic starring Leo and Milo. The invitation comes first: a journey into a world whose rules are already being written around them.

“Transmission intercepted. Unknown signal detected.”

Pawtronica in the red centre panel of the triptych: a black cat with yellow eyes beneath a blue planet and descending red lines.

Milo in the cyan right panel of the triptych: a dark cat with orange eyes, stars and curling blue forms.
Milo

Rough drafts were made in Adobe Firefly from photographs of Leo and Milo. I then cut, painted, layered and inked over them in Procreate and Photoshop. The final pieces combine that hand-finishing with KraftTone halftones and deliberately imperfect print registration.

The Eye in the Static

Milo notices the watcher. Leo sees only the familiar. The same image holds two incompatible versions of reality.

“It’s inside the signal now.”
Read the dialogue

Milo: Leo… do you see it?

Leo: See what? There’s nothing outa here but the usual…

Leo: Milo… what do you mean by “it”?

Milo: It’s looking straight at you… like it knows you’re not supposed to be there!

Milo: It’s inside the signal now.

First Static, Then Something Else

Milo is alone on an alien world. A voice forms in the stars, and the signal starts to feel like a memory.

“No… this can’t be real. Can it?”
Read the dialogue

Caption: First, just static. Then… something else.

Caption: “A trick of the mind?” “Or something trying to reach Milo?”

Milo: Those aren’t just stars… they’re forming… something.

Signal: I’m alive. The stars whispered it.

Milo: L… L…E…O?

Milo: No… this can’t be real. Can it?

Milo: How long have I been here? Minutes? Hours? Days?

Signal: L…E…O?

A little about me

The person behind
the monsters.

I’m Kais, an illustrator based in Berlin. I make horror and sci-fi covers, build characters, and turn strange ideas into illustrated worlds.

My work draws on old newsstand comics: bold lettering, limited colour, halftone dots and print that doesn’t quite line up. I work digitally and with mixed media to give new images that well-worn feel.

And yes, the space cats are real. Leo and Milo started as my cats before finding their way into the work.
